The sculptural form symbolises the vessel of life, which has weathered a storm and forever lost its original integrity. It has all already happened. The storm has subsided, but the former form is lost, as is the strength that allowed it to remain intact. The work conveys a state in which life is pieced together from the last surviving fragments and held together by fragile, chance-found fastenings. There is no outward drama in this state—only acceptance: despite all the destruction, you remain yourself and find the strength within to simply be. The artist’s signature is deliberately placed in the traditional spot—at the bottom of the vessel—which indicates that the vessel has been overturned. The possibility of exhibiting the work in a vertical position is an intentional part of the artistic concept. In this position, the work will remain in equilibrium whilst in a precarious, unstable state — just as life makes its way towards a new and fragile equilibrium. Handcrafted from a composite cellulose-ceramic clay, the piece reinterprets structural seams and cracks as an integral part of its emotional narrative, rather than as traces of repair. Unlike traditional studio ceramics, which are by their very nature fragile and prone to breakage upon impact, the artist’s composite material possesses exceptional structural strength and high impact resistance. Although the piece visually resembles an unfinished, raw texture, it is surprisingly strong, resilient and lightweight. This durable object was created exclusively as a non-functional work of art for display in an interior. It is not intended to be filled with water.
